However, its growth and popularity in Nepal has been nothing short of remarkable, thanks to the efforts of Cricket Association of Nepal – Kathmandu District.It was in the late 19th century that cricket first made its way to Kathmandu District, brought by British soldiers stationed in the area. Slowly but steadily, the game gained momentum with the locals and started to be played in schools and colleges. The first recorded match took place in 1939 between Nepal Armed Police Force and Nepal Army, with the former emerging as the victorious team. This sparked a widespread interest in the game, and by the 1950s, several clubs and teams were formed in the district.The next significant milestone for cricket in Kathmandu District was the formation of Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) in 1982. It served as the governing body for cricket in Nepal and played a crucial role in organizing and promoting the sport in the country. CAN’s efforts led to the formation of Kathmandu Cricket League in 1998, which later became the premier cricket league in the district.But it was in the 21st century that cricket in Kathmandu District saw a groundbreaking evolution. The district’s team, Kathmandu Kings XI, made its debut in the first season of the Nepal Premier League in 2013 and went on to win the title in 2016. This success put Kathmandu District on the national cricket map and inspired many young players to take up the sport.In 2016, CAN was suspended by the International Cricket Council due to internal conflicts, which led to the formation of a new governing body, Cricket Association of Nepal – Kathmandu District (CANKD). Since then, CANKD has been working relentlessly to develop cricket in the district, with a particular focus on the grassroots level.
